Now you may not immediately associate Puerto Banús with sport in the conventional sense – unless you’re thinking of yachting or the sport of having a good time – but this famous beachside area close to Marbella’s Golden Mile has a very good choice of options within a small distance.
Water sports
As an internationally renowned Mediterranean marina, the most obvious sporting tradition in Puerto Banús is that of yachting, and all manner of related water sports. Look across the beautiful vessels in the yacht harbour and you may not spot quite so many sailing boats, but sailing, power boating and water ski are all among the options. Add scuba diving, jet skis, pleasure boat trips and training schools in all the above, and it is clear that Puerto Banús is more than just a pretty marina. It is possible to rent yachts or join groups and excursions here, so if it’s a nautical experience you’re after you need look no further.
Promenade sports
The beach walk that extends in both directions from Puerto Banús is a seaside promenade known as the Paseo Marítimo. Popular with romantic strollers, dog walkers and those who simply wish to sit on a bench and take in the wide open seascapes, it is also very much in with cyclists, roller-skaters and fitness fanatics. The latter tend to gather on the beach in the morning or early evening, joining those practicing yoga or Tai Chi on the soft sands. Alternatively, you can also head for one of the professional fitness centres in the area, which offer gyms complete with trained instructors, aerobics, indoor swimming pools, healthy cafés, comfortable changing rooms and complete privacy.
Tennis and Golf
There are several golf courses and racquet clubs within a very short distance from Puerto Banús, but the Los Granados Racket Club offers first class tennis and paddle tennis facilities within a few hundred metres from the beach, while the nine-hole Dama de Noche Golf Club is famous for being the nearest course to Puerto Banús as well as for being the only one in Andalucía to offer a night game.
