Málaga came away from the Spain and Portugal Michelin Guide gala in Girona with its culinary head held high. The province’s eight existing Michelin starred restaurants all retained their stars, safeguarding Málaga’s status as leader in the region.

Last year, three new restaurants, Sollo in Fuengirola, Messina in Marbella and Kabuki Raw in Casares were newcomers to the prestigious guide and they maintained their status in 2016. The other Michelin starred restaurants in the province have had Michelin stars for some years and include El Lago in Marbella, José Carlos García in Málaga, Skina in Marbella and Restaurante Dani García in Marbella, which has the additional accolade of boasting two Michelin stars.

The irrepressible Dani García
Chef Dani García has been a leading light in raising the profile of Marbella and Málaga province as a fine dining destination and he has worked tirelessly to promote the talented chefs here. After the gala dinner, he said: “This year has been a drought (in terms of new stars) but you have to value what you have and being among the best restaurants in Spain is very important for Málaga and Andalucía, and we are going to continue to work at it and try to get that third star.” Michelin describes the chef’s flagship restaurant as “Elegant complex with Andalusian style, in a magnificent subtropical garden that gives it privacy,” and adds “Excellent cooking, worth a detour,” which those who have eaten there will surely agree with.

Marbella’s other Michelin stars
Marbella has garnered excellent reviews overall and the Michelin guide praises Messina in Marbella for “using top quality ingredients, dishes with distinct flavours are carefully prepared to a consistently high standard” and offers dishes from Spain, South America and Asia. The Guide also praises Skina in Marbella’s Old Town for its “interesting and bold approach to top quality gastronomy and inspired creative cuisine” and urges readers to visit what it describes as “a miniscule restaurant with an impressive glass-fronted wine cellar.” Indeed, its interesting wine list receives a special mention, providing an excellent reason for wine buffs visiting Marbella to book a table in this atmospheric restaurant secreted among the romantic lanes of the Casco Antiguo.

Thanks to the work of these restaurateurs and their imaginative chefs, Málaga province is rivalling the rest of Spain and highlighting the fact that visitors to the south of Spain can enjoy a level of culinary invention that Spain has become famous for, much of it thanks to El Bulli and chef Ferran Adría who made it a gastronomic landmark. For Marbella to boast four restaurants with Michelin stars is a further testament to the great strides it is making as a destination that offers so much more sun, sea and sangria.
