The Marbella marina of Puerto Banús is well known as a highly desirable residential destination—and in fact proof that it has been so for at least 2,000 years is available for everyone to see at the remarkable Roman Villa at Río Verde.

Although there are not many walls left standing the superb mosaic floor has been meticulously excavated to expose to view a piece of art that surely could only have adorned a luxury home—a sign that this residential area has long since attracted wealthy homeowners.

The mosaic designs were sadly damaged when a famous Medusa’s head image—ironically traditionally used to ward off thieves—was stolen earlier this year. Now work has been put out to tender to restore this part of the floor. Despite that, what remains is truly impressive and most definitely worth a visit.

Unique Roman villa in Marbella
Where traditional mosaics tend towards classical and religious themes, the villa at Río Verde also displays a unique collection of black and white designs depicting everyday life: shoes, kitchen utensils and tables filled with food. They are very well preserved and such designs are virtually unknown elsewhere. Each image has been used in the appropriate room—for example, the pictures of shoes are at the entrance to the dining room, reflecting the Roman tradition of removing footwear before entering, while the kitchen area depicts rabbits, fish and game as well as tables laden with food.

The existence of a bathroom complete with plunge pool is a further indication that the villa was owned by a wealthy family—some historians have suggested it may well have been a second residence of an important merchant or landowner, just as many of Marbella’s villas and apartments are today.

The site—which is protected from the elements by a modern canopy—has now been reopened with longer visiting hours to allow as many people as possible to view this testament to Roman art. In the past it was only open on Thursdays from 11am to 1pm, but now those interested can take a look on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 10.30am to 1.30pm.

Many people visit Puerto Banús to experience the lifestyle on offer to today’s high society in the luxurious marina—a short trip to Río Verde lets them get a taste of the way of life an earlier generation of wealthy homeowners enjoyed.
