Puerto Banús is known as something of a shopper’s paradise, especially for those hunting for haute couture in the many elegant boutiques that can be found in the marina.
But it is not all about designer labels, stylish jewellery and upmarket fragrances, shopaholics seeking something a little more out of the way should pay a visit to the outdoor ‘souk’ that specialises in handmade, artisan products.
Found in the central Plaza Antonio Banderas, which has recently benefited from a no-expenses-spared makeover, the Zoco del Sol is themed on an Arabian-style open-air market and specialises in gifts and products hard to find in the shops.
The elegant, marble-paved square beside the El Corte Inglés department store is perhaps an unusual setting for the 25 drape-canopied stalls, but they really do offer a feel of a North African souk—albeit a rather upmarket one (but then this is Puerto Banús)!
Stallholders sell unique objets d’art, clothing and accessories, hand-blown glass, artisan jewellery and fragrancies, ceramics, and even antique items and paintings, amongst much more. It is not only the perfect place to pick up an unusual gift, but a diverting way to pass some time while en route to view the yachts in the marina or have dinner in one of the port’s many restaurants.
The Zoco del Sol was launched by the town hall in conjunction with the Asociación de Artesanos de la Costa del Sol (Association of Artisans of the Costa del Sol), as a Saturday morning market in 2011, but it proved so popular and successful in drawing more people to Puerto Banús that it was decided to make it a daily event each summer. Stalls open for business at 11am and keep trading until around midnight, while regular musical performances add to the attraction and help give it a fun and lively atmosphere in keeping with the reputation of Puerto Banús.
Should you like to sample the vibrant way of life on offer in the area, Banús Property has a selection of apartments to rent or buy in all the premium residential complexes of the marina such as Playas del Duque, Las Gaviotas, Andalucía del Mar or Medina Gardens—please contact us for more details.
