The holiday season has started with a bang in Puerto Banús, with busy bars and restaurants, and high occupancy rates in the marina’s five-star hotels reported over Easter.
Giuseppe Russo, president of local business organisation Asociación de Empresarios y Profesionales told local newspaper Diario Sur: “There has been a definite rise in trade in the luxury sector. Bars have recorded big growth in customer numbers this Easter compared to last. A highlight has been the increased presence of English and Dutch customers. The hotels have had an excellent result, with very good levels of occupancy.”
In fact, Marbella as a whole experienced a busy Easter with many five-star resorts reporting all rooms sold from Thursday to Easter Sunday, and occupancy rates of 80% at the start of the week.
This bodes well for the rest of the year, especially with the news that bookings from abroad have been strong. Puerto Banús’ reputation as a high-end fun destination has been boosted in recent years by investment in infrastructure, marketing initiatives around the world by the town hall and international exposure from TV programmes such as Life in Marbs.
5 million visitors welcomed each year
The port has much to offer the estimated 5 million visitors it welcomes each year, with more than 200 establishments including fine dining restaurants, nightclubs, bars and shopping opportunities for international luxury brands such as Carolina Herrera, Roberto Cavalli, Dolce & Gabbana, La Martina, Gucci, Armani, Louis Vuitton, Jimmy Choo and Tom Ford.
The local authorities, in recognition of Puerto Banús’ reputation as a luxury resort, have ensured facilities at the marina are kept in good order as evidenced by the recent refurbishment to a very high standard of the marble-paved Antonio Banderas Plaza at a cost of €434,000, while private investments are being made to develop a new high-end commercial centre aimed at attracting more designer-label boutiques.
With care and attention taken to consolidate Puerto Banús’ position as a luxury destination, it is little wonder that Marbella as a whole was second in Spain for spending on luxury goods and services last year. The €1.563 million spent in Marbella was behind only Barcelona’s total of €1.819 million and ahead of Madrid’s €909 million, according to the Asociación Española del Lujo’s Luxury Spain report.
Marbella was the only one of the top three cities to show an increase in this segment—confirming the success of the resort town as a high-end destination.
